About NEPHO

There are 12 Public Health Observatories (PHOs) working across the five nations of England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The nine Public Health Observatories in England work together through a single work programme which contains both national and local elements. We produce information, data and intelligence on people's health and health care for practitioners, policy makers and the wider community. Our expertise lies in turning information and data into meaningful health intelligence to support decision-makers.

On behalf of the Department of Health, the North East Public Health Observatory works in partnership with the NHS, local authorities and national agencies.

NEPHO's national lead areas are:

• Learning disabilities
• Mental health
• Europe and international
• Offender health

We also have some national responsibilities. These include:

• The Learning Disabilities Public Health Observatory
• SHAPE – a web based tool to help those commissioning and delivering hospital care
• National Library for Public Health - via NHS Evidence

We have bases in Stockton and in Newcastle, as well as close links with the cancer registry in Leeds (NYCRIS).
