Working for NEPHO
Is Stockton on Tees a nice place to work?
Yes, it is. To prove it, we thought we'd put together a little page about all the fun you could have if you worked on Teesside.

Exciting developments
NEPHO is based at the University of Durham's exciting new Queens Campus development in Thornaby on Tees.
The site was once an iron works, but is now a hub of exciting regeneration initiatives.
What was once a toxic dumping ground is now a mixture of university campus, riverside walks, white water rafting, car parking, residential care homes, railway sidings, nature reserves and call centres.

Thornaby is said to have come into existence about AD 800 when the land was given by Halfdene, King of the Danes, to Thormod, one of his noblemen, hence "Thormods-by" - Thormod's village.
Stockton has the widest high street in the UK. It is nearly half a mile long, and takes almost a minute to cross.
NEPHO is only a nine minute walk from Thornaby railway station, which is an important railway passenger hub. It's where the Tees Valley Line, the Durham Coast Line and the North Transpennine lines all converge. One day, it might even form part of a proposed Tees Valley Metro system.
We're only a short walk from two nature reserves - Maze Park, and Portrack Marsh, which attract lots of migratory birds such as the grasshopper warbler. Kingfishers and sand martins are often seen!
Teesmouth Bird Club has produced a guide to the Birds of Portrack Marsh and the Tees Barrage
We often see seals swimming amongst the foam in the River Tees near the barrage. They like to eat 49% of the salmon.
Our Queens Campus site lies in the middle of StocktonMiddlesbrough's green blue heart, a plan to link Stockton and Middlesbrough through a lovely waterfront

The Tees Railway marshalling yard is brilliant for seeing all sorts of exciting trains. As well as the usual passenger and freight trains, steam trains often chug through on their way to events on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
The campus has two onsite cafés - the waterside restaurant and Café Aroma, opposite the entrance to the Information Resource Centre.
A new style community may be created, providing something different for people on Teeside - possibly with a Scandinavian or German influence.
Durham University, Queen's Campus, Stockton has been awarded a Northumbria In Bloom, Britain in Bloom Regional Competition 2008, William Leech Trophy for the Grounds of Universities, Colleges and Sports' Grounds - GOLD AWARD

A shortlist of six unusual designs have been chosen for housing on the North Shore site, opposite the University campus.
The Tees White Water Course may soon be upgraded to provide more water flow, a new course, and to generate electricity. On completion, it will be the best course in the UK, and the only sustainable course in the world!
Teeside is the only place in the world capable of dismantling ghost ships, such as Le Clemenceau. Contrary to popular rumour, these ships have not been found floating adrift with no crew. They are not haunted by any apparitions. The vessels are not crewed by any manner of spectral or non-living beings.
The university campus is part of National Cycle Network route 1. Stockton bicycle club was founded in 1877.
