A key role of public health is to reduce health inequalities and health inequities. Measuring inequalities accurately is essential to targeting effort and monitoring change. However, this is still a complex area with a number of controversies. Fortunately, the North East has plenty of experience and expertise in this area and this conference will look at current methods and issues around the measurement of inequalities. In the afternoon we will look at Health Equity Audit (HEA) and the experience gained in techniques to undertake it in this region over the last few years.
