Filling the Data Gaps
In the summer of 2011 we published a review of the data collected by the NHS and the Department of Health about the health and healthcare of people with learning disabilities. That report made a number of recommendations about how the gaps could be filled. This report documents the progress by the end of the three years of the initial Learning Disabilities Observatory contract.

Knowledge Transfer within the offender health pathway in the North East
Evidence-based healthcare is important in any setting. This report uses a literature review and interviews to explore knowledge transfer in prison Healthcare and other offender health settings. There is general agreement about the importance of knowledge transfer and an acknowledgement of the particular challenges in prison settings. A number of interesting examples of knowledge transfer practices and initiatives are being undertaken (including knowledge transfer between professionals, locally commissioned research and reviews, training and educational opportunities). But the current knowledge transfer practices are inconsistent so there is a need to develop an evidence base for a model that is appropriate to each setting.

National end of life care programme newsletter August 2011
This month’s newsletter looks at both the environment in which end of life care is delivered and also the needs of carers at the end of life and, I think, shows quite clearly how things are changing for the better.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease in the North East of England
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is linked to smoking, occupational dust and pollution, and is particularly prevalent in the North East of England. This paper reviews prevalence estimates and highlights the fact that over 32,000 people in the North East are living with undiagnosed COPD. COPD costs the NHS an estimated £491million every year and this paper highlights emergency admission rates for COPD. Mortality rates from COPD in the North East are higher than in England (accounting for 6% of all deaths), and the inequality gap appears to be increasing.

A users guide to data collected in primary care in England
More NHS contacts occur and more NHS prescriptions are written in primary care than in any other setting. It is no surprise therefore that enormous quantities of data are routinely collected in thousands of separate general practices the length and breadth of the United Kingdom every day. These population-based data on individuals from birth vary, but include information on symptoms, investigations, diagnoses, referrals, treatment and outcomes, and therefore represent an incredible resource for research, education, audit, quality management, service development and planning. In an aggregated form this information could provide the most complete picture about the health of the national population as is conceivably possible. This succinct, clearly presented Association of Public Health Observatories report, written by authors with considerable expertise, is very timely. It brings together and summarises information about known sources of primary care data (focusing on general practice teams rather than the professions allied to medicine), the methods and systems used to access primary care data at the moment, and sets out their range, strengths and weaknesses.

An introduction to Quality and Outcomes Framework data
On 31 August 2005, the NHS Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) published GP practice level data relating to the Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) of the new General Medical Services contract (nGMS) for the 2004â"2005 financial year. As the nGMS came into force on 01 April 2004, 2004â"2005 represents the first financial year for which QOF information is available for England.
