North East Public Health Observatory: Pilot Peer Review: April 2009
Since NEPHO was first established, it has balanced the challenges of delivering its core work programme, whilst delivering its strategic aim of growing and developing its wider work on national, regional, local and specialist programmes and projects. Stakeholders hold the quality of its work in very high regard and NEPHO is seen as a dynamic and entrepreneurial organisation that has established a strong reputation with stakeholders.
The strategy of growing its diverse project and programme range has resulted in growth in the specialist support it can offer and the number of staff it has to deliver this.
Stakeholders hold the Director, his senior management team and staff in high regard.
NEPHO is seen as a credible organisation with an openness to establishing strong partnership
working which can deliver high quality products
The key messages from the review are;
NEPHO is a very ambitious organisation with a strong entrepreneurial spirit, is well led and managed, and a good place to work
It has a good team of staff that are well respected across the region
Products are of high quality and again are well respected
NEPHO has developed some excellent partnerships across the region
There is, however, a need to:
· Recognise and addresses the risks that a diverse portfolio of work brings and to ensure the balance between core and additional work is appropriate
· Clarify the lead responsibility for business development within NEPHO to address the organisational requirements to deliver the strategy
Continue to work to better understand the needs of stakeholders and evaluate their satisfaction
NEPHO should continue to be proactive and work to understand the future needs of stakeholders such as PCTs and Local Authorities, in order that it can maintain its high standards, keep ahead of its competitors from the private sector, and meet the needs of potentially more customers ranging from individual PCTs to local strategic partnerships and other individual organisations in the public sector.
