Maternal Obesity & Pregnancy Outcome Project Information Sheet
The prevalence of obesity in the North East has been increasing at a higher rate than the national average, making it an important public health issue for this region.
The latest triennial report by the Confidential Enquiry into Maternal and Child Health (CEMACH) 'Why Mothers Die 2000 - 2002', shows 35% of women who had a pregnancy related death were obese. The findings of this report, and the increasing regional rates of obesity, have led to concerns from service providers about the potential harmful effects of obesity during pregnancy on both mother and child, and the effect it may have on running regional obstetric services.
