Mental Health Care Funding in England

The greater part of mental health care in England is provided through the National Health Service. The overall level of funding for the National Health Service is determined each year by government, and these resources are divided between a set of commissioning authorities responsible for purchasing care for the population of geographically defined areas.

This allocation is made using a complex set of formulae which aim to establish a fair share for each commissioning authority. The calculation is based on population size and characteristics, the likely level of health care need, and local costs of providing health care. Mental health care need is treated separately from other types and therefore the mental health component within each commissioning authority's annual allocation can be identified.

This report sets out total and mental health allocations for each health authority from 1999/2000 to 2002/3 and for each primary care trust in 2003/4.
