Occasional Paper No 25 - Drug Related Deaths (Post Event) 2006
DRDs increased between 2003 and 2004 in the North East against a national falling trend. However, the North East has not been highlighted by np-SAD as having amongst the highest death rates nationally.
DRDs are recorded onto a number of different systems including the ONS, np-SAD, STEIS and NDTMS. Due to the variation in the level of recorded deaths, from 19 recorded by STEIS and 67 by np-SAD to 189 by ONS in 2004, the North East PHO recommends ONS data as the only system appropriate for the analysis of epidemiological trends.
The North East PHO recommends a regional approach to improving investigation into and recording of DRDs, including conducting confidential enquiries as a matter of course.
