RMSO Annual Report
Maternal and child health are crucial to improving the health of the population in the North East and North Cumbria. The Regional Maternity Survey Office (RMSO) has an essential contribution to the improvement of maternal and child health through its surveillance and benchmarking functions. A major role of the RMSO is in informing the NHS and other statutory organisations of adverse outcomes in an effective and timely manner. The RMSO endeavours to report complex information in a responsible and accessible way so that the information can be used by commissioners, providers and users of maternal and child health services in the North East and North Cumbria. Perinatal and maternal deaths are fortunately rare occurrences and therefore require careful analysis, interpretation and reporting.
This is the twenty-sixth annual report produced by the RMSO. It presents data from 2007 (the most recent data available) and reports on activities for 2008. The data analysis for the Perinatal Mortality Survey (PMS) and the Northern Survey of Twin and Multiple Pregnancy (NorSTAMP) is dependant upon the release of the birth denominator data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) which were only received for 2007 in December 2008. The objectives of this report are:
- To provide clinical staff involved in the care of women and children with high quality information about the outcomes of pregnancy.
- To provide commissioners and managers involved in the provision of maternity and child health services with high quality outcome data to support the improvement of service quality and clinical governance for women and children in the North East and North Cumbria
- To inform those with an interest in maternal and child health about the range and use of data that is held by the RMSO and how this can be used for epidemiological and health services research.
