NDTMS North East Region Annual Report 2008 using data from 06/07

The North East of England has a population 2.6 million and around 16,000 problem drugs users. There are 12 Drug Action team areas and 147 agencies providing structured drug treatment. Data for the region from NDTMS for 2006-07 show:

• 11,689 North East individuals of all ages were in contact with services;
• 10,630 (91%) were adults and 75% were male;
• the peak age group for referrals to treatment is 25-29;
• there has been a 23% increase in numbers in treatment since 2004/05;
• County Durham has largest number of people in treatment and Darlington has the fewest;
• Middlesbrough has the highest rate of people in treatment and Northumberland has the lowest;
• Heroin is main substance, accounting for 56% of clients in contact with services;
• 40% of clients had never injected their drug;
• 27% of clients self-referred to services;
• 37% of completed treatment journeys were considered to have successfully completed treatment.
