The Office for National Statistics produced updated life expectancy figures on 19th October 2011 (for further information http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/taxonomy/index.html?nscl=Population). This briefing provides a summary of the results for the North East.
APHO Technical Briefing 8: Prevalence modelling
This is the eighth in a series of technical briefings produced by the Association of Public Health Observatories (APHO), designed to support public health practitioners and analysts and to promote the use of public health intelligence in decision making. Tis briefing discusses the need for prevalence modelling and provides an overview of various methods of generating estimates of the prevalence of diseases or risk factors in local populations. Some of the most common methods for assessing the accuracy and robustness of models are summarised and some of the challenges in developing and using prevalence estimates are considered.

I2SARE Regional Health Profiles
The European project I2SARE (Health Inequalities Indicators in the Regions of Europe) was established to produce a health profile for each region of the European Union, to create a typology of those regions of Europe and a typology of sub-regional territories in selected countries and regions. These new tools produced by I2SARE will give European, national, regional and local decision makers a quick and concentrated overview about the health situation in region in comparison with other European regions.

2010 Health Profiles
Local health profiles describe the health of the local population and enable the comparison of indicators describing health and determinants of health at local, regional and national levels. The 2010 health profiles can be accessed via the Health Profiles website: http://www.healthprofiles.info/. Previous years profiles can also be accessed through this link, together with underlying indicator data.
APHO Technical Briefing 5 - Geodemographic Segmentation
In this briefing we take a summary overview of segmentation and then focus on one approach to segmentation using geodemographic methods. We then compare the most commonly available geodemographic segmentation tools, highlighting the possible applications within the health sector and discussing some of the factors that should be considered when looking to invest in a system.

Major changes are underway in the NHS and it is vital that the focus on improving health and tackling inequalities in health is maintained during the transition period.
As the Directors of Public Health of the six current PCTs in County Durham and Darlington, we are determined that the partnership work to improve health and tackle health inequalities, developed and delivered in the last four years, is taken forward in the new organisational arrangements.
