Knowledge Transfer within the offender health pathway in the North East

Evidence-based healthcare is important in any setting. This report uses a literature review and interviews to explore knowledge transfer in prison Healthcare and other offender health settings. There is general agreement about the importance of knowledge transfer and an acknowledgement of the particular challenges in prison settings. A number of interesting examples of knowledge transfer practices and initiatives are being undertaken (including knowledge transfer between professionals, locally commissioned research and reviews, training and educational opportunities). But the current knowledge transfer practices are inconsistent so there is a need to develop an evidence base for a model that is appropriate to each setting.

The Mental Health Minimum Data Set 2006/07 and 2007/08

The Mental Health Minimum Dataset (MHMDS) was introduced in April 2003, to collect detailed data on the mental health care received by individuals in England. Since that time, data have become available for secondary analysis in batches. Two years data, covering the NHS years 2006/7 and 2007/8 were made available to the Public Health Observatories in August 2009. An analysis of the substantive findings in these datasets was published by the NHS Information Centre. This paper provides an overview of a number of data quality issues emerging from the datasets. We reported on an overview of the data quality in the returns for 2004/5, here we review the issues in these more recent data.

Mental Health Observatory Brief 4 - Estimating the Prevalence of Common Mental health Problems

Planning for the new Department of Health programme to improve access to psychological therapies requires information about the numbers of people requiring its services. The national psychiatric morbidity survey programme provides information about the prevalence of relevant disorders. This Brief outlines a method to apply these findings locally. It is accompanied by a spreadsheet setting out the results of the analysis for PCTs and local authorities in England. Not all those with these disorders need, would accept psychological therapies. The morbidity survey provides further evidence about how prevalent case numbers relate to treatment requirements.
