Northumberland Carer Support Fund
The Carers Strategy, Carers at the heart of 21st century families and communities: a caring system on your side, a life of your own published in June 2008 sets out the Government's short-term agenda and long-term vision for the future care and support of carers The carers' strategy is underpinned by £255 million to implement some immediate steps alongside with medium and long-term plans of which a new commitment in the carers' strategy which includes £150 million towards planned short breaks for carers. In February 2009 the DoH invited expressions of interest in bidding for a national evaluation of three groups of demonstrator sites exploring policies and initiatives to support carers. One of the groups was Breaks for carers. The Demonstrator sites are exploring different models of providing breaks to carers. The pilots sites were selected in June 2009 and the pilots commenced in October 2009. Sunderland was one of the successful sites The demonstrator sites will test the effectiveness of the initiatives in terms of the benefits to carers and those they support, as well as their cost-effectiveness of these policies.
